🤢 Image "Poisoning", More Vertical AIs, and Executive Orders
Happy November! This is the odo newsletter–your digest on AI for product builders.
A Note About This Newsletter 🔈️
We've decided to pause the newsletter for now so we can dedicate all of our resources to developing our software to greatly enhance the product development process. We've been really enjoying keeping you in the know about AI. We'll be back!
👀 Be in the Know
Nightshade Developed to “Poison” Image Generation Models: Researches have found a way to insert data into images that will confuse the training of image generation models as a way to fight for artists and photographers having their work stolen.
Google Unveiled Image Verification Tool to Expose Misinformation and AI Fakes: It's a bit buried, but for those eager to look it up, you can now view the earliest usage and subsequent appearances of images in Google search results.
Jina AI Open-Sourced 8k Text Embedding Model Comparable to Open AI's: Embeddings can be used for many things including similarity searches, classification, and semantic analysis. This new open-source model claims to rival Open AI's model both in technical features and performance.
Nanome Launched AI Copilot for Chemists Called MARA: This chatbot gives real-time access to internal data and molecular simulations to Chemists. Another example of a vertical generative AI tool that could reshape a market.
Ubie Introduced AI Tool to Optimize Patient Interviews: This tool uses generative AI to personalize and streamline the paperwork we fill out at a doctor's office. It's only being used in Japan so far but we can hopefully look forward to a significantly improved process each time we go to the doctor.
Slate Technologies Released AI Features to Enhance Construction Decision Making: This is another example of making data more accessible to a particular vertical through a generative AI/chat interface.
Forbes Built Its Own AI Search Engine: It helps answer questions like “What are the highest paying jobs?” with information sourced exclusively from Forbes. Is this another example of a solution in search of a problem or a powerful way to perform reliable research efficiently?
News Deep Dive 🤿
Biden Issued an Executive Order on AI
President Biden has issued an executive order on AI, building on previous non-binding agreements with AI companies. The order outlines eight goals, with emphasis on creating new AI safety and security standards, promoting innovation and competition, and advancing US leadership in AI technologies. The National Institute of Standards and Safety (NIST) will develop standards to test AI models before public release but they explicitly shared that they're not going to recall models that are already available. The order also aims to prevent AI discrimination and ensure fairness in its use for sentencing, parole, and surveillance. However, an executive order is not a permanent law and lasts only during Biden's administration.
We're on board with the goals but early chatter in the tech world indicates this legislation is far from perfect. However, it provides a starting point and its temporary nature allows for testing and refinement in the market and public opinion. Despite the challenges of legislating in this technical field, especially for less tech-savvy representatives, it's crucial for the tech industry to actively participate in its improvement.
