🥊 Fighting bias; ☮️ Co-existing with AI; 🤖 Bots that attend meetings for you
Welcome to the odo newsletter—a free, weekly newsletter on AI for product builders. We'll cover:
Meta is fighting bias in computer vision models
Both Adobe and Hollywood are confronting how AI might coexist with creatives
Google released Duet AI to enhance and connect tools across Google Workspace
…and more!
News of the week 🗞️
🎭 Meta Released a Dataset For Evaluating Bias in Computer Vision Models
Meta is pushing back on bias in the AI industry. On Thursday, they released a dataset dubbed FACET designed to benchmark computer vision models for bias in tasks involving people. It's made up of 32,000 images labeled by experts for demographic attributes (e.g., perceived gender presentation, perceived age group), additional physical attributes (e.g., perceived skin tone, hairstyle) and person-related classes (e.g., basketball player, doctor).
Move fast and check yourself…AI has been plagued by problems with bias since its inception. It's great to see Meta leveraging its size to make it easier for others to move fast in a less risky way.
🎨 Adobe Developing Image Generators That Won't Steal Artist's Work
Adobe announced they'll be releasing Adobe Firefly which consists of two different image generation models. One is designed to generate images similar to DALL·E and Midjourney. The other is designed to generate WordArt. One of the most unique things about these models is that they are developed exclusively with material that is either without copyright or has the proper licenses. They're also reportedly exploring ways to compensate artists for their contributions.
An artist-first model from an artist-first company…It makes sense that Adobe would be on the forefront of developing AI models with deep respect for the folks creating the original pieces. But, will their models measure up in quality with other players in the space given the more limited training set? We certainly hope so!
📺 Fable Announces a Platform to Autonomously Craft TV Shows
A startup called Fable announced a platform called SHOW-1 to autonomously craft TV shows. They claim SHOW-1 can write, produced, direct, animate, and even voice entirely new episodes of TV shows.
A next phase in a societal moment…Hollywood has always played an outsized role in our culture. Fable announced this in the midst of a writers strike which is partially about protecting themselves from being replaced by AI. Even just the announcement of a product like this could bolster Studios' negotiating power. How this plays out will likely help define how other industries react to AI powered tools. Will creative positions be drastically reduced, will people find ways to work alongside the tools, or will we institute policies that bar AI tools altogether?

🤖 Google Duet AI for Google Workspace
Last Tuesday, Google released Duet AI, a tool to enhance and connect tools across Google Workspace. For an extra fee every month, you can use this to capture notes, action items, and video snippets from your meetings (including ones you don't even attend). You can also chat with AI about your content, summarize docs, and catch up on missed conversations.
Microsoft and many other companies have also been working on enhancing their productivity tools with AI, but when such a big player, especially one used so widely by product builders, we have to sit up and pay attention. Is this going to be just another slapped on AI layer or will it unlock the next level of productivity?

❌ The end of CAPTCHAs and Passwords?
Tired of the endless CAPTCHAs? Why not just have AI do them for you? Ironically, bots' are now up to 15% more accurate than humans. Also, start preparing your parting thoughts for passwords; AI can now detect what you're typing over zoom with 93% accuracy. It seems we'll finally be free of these terrible tools, but what will replace them?
